create/join a personal/professional learning networkThis is a featured page

why?.... great voicethread telling us why via Alec Couros @courosa
professional development

great idea from Jim Folkestad - teacher training - get CSU to give credit for prove of this.
likewise - tic credit for ongoing proof.

via Wendy Drexler - pens her study on professional learning environemnts to balance teacher control and student ownership k-12

Jeff Utecht - just finished an excellent ebook called Reach
a personal/professional learning network how to book.

here's a post on social learning networks... in it i suggest joining:
1. a personal learning network:
.......
YOU join TSD Tech Ning now...
and maybe start your own: Ning
monika: communities: house them all somewhere and use same username and password
join a pln - your pd - design itvia Will Richardson - do it for yourself 1st, ..your class 2nd

teacher pln

2. a social platform kids use:
......YOU - add one now to your phone and test it - or to laptop and chat/draw with it.
add to phone w/texting: google (466-453) / flickr (they give you a link) / twitter (us:40404) / polleverywhere, chacha ,
ipods - a whole new world
flipvideo, youtube
examples: skype , wetpaint, voicethread, jing, dabbleboard/flockdraw, broadcasts, tutorials, me videos, ipod

note: as the web above indicates - student voice should be a part of your network.. #2 is a means for students to develop their own networks.. but also great avenues for you to hear student voices.

3. twitter:
..YOU join Twitter,now
a place you can learn something daily if you want, per your passion, recommended educators to follow:
@courosa, @shellterrell, @bengrey, @smartinez, @coolcatteacher, @budtheteacher, @lasic, @rmbyrne, @ozge, @cybraryman1, @tomwhitby, @NMHS_Principal, @karlfisch, @davecormier, @web20classroom, @willrich45, @skipvia

note: while twitter is probably - currently - one of the best means to host/encourage/enrich a personal learning network - all of twitter - or even all of who you follow is mostly likely not going to be your personal learning network.

great video for pln training via @skipvia

best piece of advice for being a teacher?... for being alive even...
create a personallearningenvironment
via will richardson (watch this clip later.. you'll love it)
what's key about Will's message for me personally - he taught me - to
do it for yourself first.

_________________________________________________________________________
if you aren't learning something new everyday..
you shouldn't be a teacher. period.
are you even alive?
_________________________________________________________________________

We have messed things up quite a bit:
1) assessments - assessment should be ongoing - self-induced - opportunities to tweak yourself, we've made them a faulty tool to tell people if they are good or bad - perpetual beta
2) teaching vs learning - teachers should model learning, not so much teaching, in the classroom [erica mcwilliams, usefully ignorant, knowing what to do when you don't know what to do]

3) standardization should be about access, for people - you need customization
access - to web and tools
process - are teachers modeling learning via ple?
connectivity - are students connecting to ple with help from teachers/facilitators and via their modeling
___________________________________________________________
so i'm telling you..
do it for yourself first.
Create your own pln per passion - in some ning, on twitter, face-to-face
look again, esp, how ben carefully selected his, and i guarantee you, everything else will fall into place. i'm wondering if it's the only way to get true

create/join a personal/professional learning network - your pd - design it
(ben just tweeted me ... wanted me to let you know he is always available for conversation. he is an incredible thinker.. daily questions here.)

overwhelmed? - don't even know where to start?
2. read a post daily... i suggest seth godin or ben wilkoff
